Chronology of cameras Olympus
This camera was presented at the PMA in March 1985, named OM - PC. Its major innovation was its selective light measurement mode *, thanks to a system called ESP (Electro Selective Pattern).
Using two light measurements by two cells and microprocessor calculations, it is capable of processing subtle light differences between the main subject and the rest of the picture.
A measurement is therefore made at the centre of the image, and a second one (average) on everything else.
Based on these two measures, the reactions will be different:
A mode: A source of intense light in the field. The system will try to bring out the less bright areas.
B1 and C1 modes: when against the light, a delicate issue, the reading at the center will be predominant.
B2 mode: the main subject is highly illuminated, on a dark background.
C2 mode: the background is more illuminated than the subject, but there is no against the light condition.
In this mode, the metering is centre weighted.
D mode: night photography. An average of two measurements will be used for correct exposure.
The ESP system is switched on only at the user's option. It is compatible with the three camera exposure modes: program, manual, and aperture-priority auto.
If it is indeed a precursor system of matrix measures, ESP has the weakness of forcing the photographer to shoot with the main subject in the center of the image, which is contrary to the basic rules of shooting.
*) Based on the OM-2 SP, the two cells of which have been diverted from their original use.
